-Women are shown less in advertising than men, proving that gender inequality has been a huge issue throughout time
-When women are advertised, they are advertised on television and in magazines as the stereotypical "housewife"-They are considered inferior to men because of how they are shown in advertising
-In the 1970s they were only shown about 20 percent of the time
-In the 1980s, women decreased in their ratio compared to men on how much they were shown on TV
-In the 1980s they were shown 5.8% less then it even did in the 1950s!!
Even today, all the laundry ads I see on TV involve women, or occasionally the inept man. I think seeing a guy who can handle housework (without it being a "so easy a clueless man can use it!" deal) would make me way more likely to chose a product.
ReplyDeleteI think something that wasn't mentioned in this article that is important(unless I'm interpreting it wrong) is the statement, "You mean a woman can open it?" It displays the gender roles that woman are seen as weak and unintelligent. It was good to incorporate an advertisement from the 1970s and compare it to current media.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jayna. I really like that you put an older advertisement where obviously women are being put down as weaker than men. I think it's a perfect example of how the media (even in this older piece) tries to define gender roles by making the men of their photos stronger and women weaker.
